The objective of the Safety Management System assessment is to provide independent verification that effective systems or processes are in place and being followed and to verify that efforts are being made to continuously improve Safety and Health programs and processes.
The Safety Management System (SMS) assessment is intended to be performed at the site based upon the SMS that is currently in place. The assessment should be conducted through a representative area of all departments within each site. During this time workplace conditions should be evaluated and employee interviews performed that will provide employee feedback on site safety and health process implementation. It is expected that the assessment will take 3-5 days to complete depending upon the type and size of the location.
A checklist below has been developed listing specific questions which will help determine the extent of implementation of each of the above SMS elements and should at a minimum include the following elements:
- Process Element #1 - Organizational Commitment & Leadership
- Process Element #2 - Employee Ownership
- Process Element #3. - Safety & Health Policies and Regulatory Compliance
- Process Element #4. - Education and Training
- Process Element #5. - Hazard Recognition, Evaluation and Control
- Process Element #6. - Performance Evaluation and Measurement
- Process Element #7. - Safety Communication
- Process Element #8. - Incident Investigation & Analysis
- Process Element# 9. - Health & Wellness
- Process Element #10. - Contractor Safety
- Process Element #11. - Off-the-Job Safety
We are available to customize a new SMS to fit in to any organizations or ensure your current system is inclusive of all essential elements. For more information or a sample of checklists, please contact Mr. Lou Rotella at ETC safety.
